De La Espada Residence London

All events are invitation only.

Over five days, Fatima and Luis will foster discussions about subjects that matter, with a programme of lectures by a diverse and thoughtful range of speakers exploring concepts around craft, the meaning of the objects and concepts that surround us, and the importance of challenging ourselves to take action.

The lectures will take place in the comfort of their west London home with De La Espada furniture by designers including Studioilse, Neri&Hu, Luca Nichetto and Matthew Hilton. De La Espada believes in the importance of craft and the need for a dramatic review of our consumerist culture. We see an urgent need for change in the way we consume energy and believe that a greater regard for both the arts and sciences can drive society toward lower energy consumption.

What we are trying to do through this cycle of lectures is to take the intimacy and honesty that we associate with the home to host a number of speakers who will encourage us to look at the unvarnished truth, reflect upon this and then help us take action. We cannot waste another decade as we have since the Financial Crisis of 2007-2008. We aim to promote the meeting point of urgency and intelligence.

We are going to start with something close to us, craft, and want to discuss how craft isn’t about objects and making but about values and mindset. We are going to invite a reasoned critique of the consumerism that surrounds us all and wonder what is to replace it, and we need to dream of a new utopia, but think carefully about the consequences and begin now to prepare for them. Climate change and an unsustainable way of life are the background that we must confront, combined with significant social justice issues and a lack of solidarity within our society and between nations.

This is a world where the radicalism of the Extinction Rebellion movement, which we have only started to witness here in London, points to a sense of urgency we desperately need. This is a world where Greta is speaking to a new generation, telling them that this is a make-or-break moment. I would find it disheartening if we be-have now as we did as the ‘80s became the ‘90s, and the ‘90s became the, terribly named, naughties. This is then a time to reflect and then to act.
